Osteoarthritis Arthritis Symptoms

Osteoarthritis is a condition in which low-grade inflammation results in pain in the joints, caused by wearing of the cartilage that covers and acts as a cushion inside joints. As the bone surfaces become less well protected by cartilage, the patient experiences pain upon weight bearing, including walking and standing. Due to decreased movement because of the pain, regional muscles may atrophy, and ligaments may become more lax. OA is the most common form of arthritis. The word is derived from the Greek word "osteo", meaning "of the bone", "arthro", meaning "joint", and "itis", meaning inflammation, although many sufferers have little or no inflammation.


Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is traditionally considered a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack the joints. It is a disabling and painful inflammatory condition, which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. RA is a systemic disease, often affecting extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and muscles. About 60% of RA patients are unable to work 10 years after the onset of their disease.[1]


Gout Arthritis Symptoms

Causes sudden, severe attacks, usually in the big toe, but any joint can be affected. A metabolic disorder in which uric acid builds up in the blood and crystals form in joints and other places. Drugs and attention to diet can control gout. Affects about 1 million Americans (70 to 80 percent men), with first attack starting between 40 and 50 years of age.


Ankylosing Spondylitis Arthritis Symptoms

A chronic inflammatory disease of the spine that can result in fused vertebrae and rigid spine. Often milder and harder to diagnose in women. Most people with the disease also have a genetic marker known as HLA-B27. Affects about 318,000 Americans, usually men between the ages of 16 and 35.

Juvenile Arthritis Symptoms

The most common form is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis diagnosis, treatment, and disease characteristics are different in children and adults. Some children recover completely; others remain affected throughout their lives. Affects about 200,000 Americans.


Psoriatic Arthritis Symptoms

Bone and other joint tissues become inflamed, and, like rheumatoid arthritis, it can affect the whole body. Affects about 5 percent of people with psoriasis, a chronic skin disease. Likely to affect fingers or spine. Symptoms are mild in most people but can be quite severe. Affects about 160,000 Americans.


Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Symptoms

Involves skin, joints, muscles, and sometimes internal organs. Symptoms usually appear in women of childbearing age but can occur in anyone at any age. Also called lupus or SLE, it can be mild or life threatening. Affects at least 131,000 Americans, nine to ten times as many women as men.


Septic arthritis

Septic arthritis is the invasion of the joint space by an infectious agent which produces arthritis. The usual etiology is bacterial, but viral, mycobacterial, and fungal arthritis occur occasionally. Bacteria are either carried by the bloodstream from an infectious focus elsewhere, introduced by a skin lesion that penetrates the joint, or by extension from adjacent tissue (e.g. bone or bursae).



Arthritis can develop as a result of an infection. For example, bacteria that cause gonorrhea or Lyme disease can cause arthritis. Infectious arthritis can cause serious damage, but usually clears up completely with antibiotics. Scleroderma is a systemic disease that involves the skin, but may include problems with blood vessels, joints, and internal organs. Fibromyalgia syndrome is soft-tissue rheumatism that doesn't lead to joint deformity, but affects an estimated 5 million Americans, mostly women. ABOUT DEPRESSION AND ITS TREATMENT

Before I begin my discussion on Depression I want you to know what experienced experts have to say about depression problems that range from the mild to the most severe: “Almost all types of depression can be reversed”.

First let us talk about simple methods that can pull you out of the not so serious depression, what may be called melancholy, the blues or just feeling down.

1) Talk to family and friends and share your problems with them. Cry if you feel like doing so.

2) Go out of the house and involve yourself in something active, such as a walk in the woods, riding your bike, playing a game, and so on. It will help if you spend a few minutes thinking about and then writing down a list of things that you enjoy doing and then starting out on that activity.

3) Remember that any type of exercise can help fight depression.

4) Put on your thinking cap and try to figure out the cause of your depression. Are you following goals that are unrealistic? Try and adjust to a more realistic situation. Write down your problems and how you think they can be solved realistically. Think about how you can make the best from your present situation.

5) Just come out of your hectic schedule, slow down and relax, do something easy to move your attention away from the depression. Stay out of tense environments and situations.

6) Try to enjoy life. Eat right (no excessive eating or too much fatty food or alcohol), exercise, and do the normal things which do not involve any major changes.

7) Nutrition has an important effect on your mental state. B-complex and amino acid supplements have been shown to be helpful in treating depression.

8) If your depression does not clear out within about 15 days and you continue to have the following symptoms: feeling anxiety or sadness, guilt and helplessness, loss of interest and pleasure, poor sleep, low energy, irritable, poor concentration and memory, eating disorders; its time to seek professional medical help.

The best things in life may not be free. But there is one thing which can do wonders, and it costs nothing---laughter. The adage "laughter is the best medicine" holds very much true even today.

Researchers have found that laughter improves your mood, reduces anxiety, eases stress,and is associated with creativity and emotional stability. Laughter helps lower blood pressure, adds years to your life and also helps one de-stress. So why not laugh all your worries away.

A new study from the University of Maryland Medical Center has shown that laughter, along with a healthy sense of humor is good for your heart. Researchers found that people with heart disease were 40 per cent less likely to laugh in a variety of situations compared to people of the same age without heart disease.

The study compared the humor responses of 300 people, 150 who had a history of heart disease either a heart attack or who had gone through a coronary artery bypass surgery.

The other 150 participants were all healthy, age matched adults who were free of heart disease.

The participants in the study completed two questionnaires.

The first measured the participants humor response in different situations. The second questionnaire had true/false questions that measure anger and hostility.

The results of the study showed that people with heart disease are less likely to laugh in uncomfortable situations and were overall less likely to recognize humor. The participants with heart disease laughed less than the healthy participants, even in positive situations.

"We don't know yet why laughing protects the heart, but we know that mental stress is associated with impairment of the epithelium, the protective barrier lining our blood vessels. This can cause a series of inflammatory reactions that lead to fat and cholesterol build-up in the coronary arteries and ultimately to heart attack" says Dr.Michael Miller.MD.FACC. director of the centre for preventive Cordiology at the University of Maryland Medical Centre says Dr.Sunil Wadhwa consultant physician and cardiologist, "During laughter, hormones are released in the body which relax the mind and body. There is decrease in hormones which produce stress hormones adrenaline and steroids. There is also release of hormones dopamine and serotonin.Which provides us with a feeling of wellbeing"

Dr Wadhwa adds " There are several laughter clubs in India, even though it may be mechanical laughter, they help people distress and relax. Once there is decreased in stress hormones, there is reduction in diseases like heart problems, blood pressure and diabetes"

The following article is about alternative herbal remedies and techniques to control high blood pressure. Another home remedy that seems to work with many people is the following. Mix 5 ml of onion juice with 5 ml of honey and take this mixture everyday, first thing in the morning. Try this remedy for 15 days, monitor blood pressure levels regularly and continue, if you experience a benefit.

ABOUT EXERCISE

Exercise has multiple benefits from increased muscle strength decreased weight and improved health. But how stays on a programme for more than a week ?

Research shows that if you can maitain an activity for 30 days you will be more likely to stick with it. And if you can maintain an activity for 60 days it will be harder to stop the habit than to continue.

This is one reason an exercise diary can be critical to your success. You may think that an excercise diary only includes the workout that was done, but there is so much more that can be recorded.

Recording exercise helps you to notice trends in your performance. If you rate in your performance through both objective and subjective critatia you will notice differences between your actual performance and how you felt that you performed.
Diaries can be retrospective (historical) and prospective (future). In other words you ca use the diary to record a plan for your workout and then record the actual routine. Using this strategy people new to an exercise routine have a greater chance of continuing the programme.
The diary acts somewhat like an accountability partner. The routine is written down and if you neglect to start or complete it you must also record your results. Using the diary to maintain your focus icreases your chanses of success.
Excercise diaries also help to highlight weaknesses in both your progamme and your abilities. Keeping track of your performance in different activities will indicate your abilities. And that some information will show you how quickly or slowly you are progressing.
Motivation is a problem for many people who are exercising or new to an exercise routine.
Doing the same thing day after day can be monotonous. Recording your objective data and watching the changes can often times increase your desire to continue. You can also change your routines and be assured that you have a record of what really worked and what does not.
Exercise diaries should include objective data such as heart rate before, during and after the amount of time you spent exercising any resistance ( weights ) you may be using, time 0f day you are exercising and measurements of your arms, thighs, waist and hips over time.
Subjective data should include how you feel before, during and after exercise. You can use a numeric rating system to be able to compare your "feelings" over time. Now you can evaluate when your top times to exercise are based on your rating system.
Exercise diaries give you the edge to improve your programme, increase your motivation, determine your best workouts and times, track your progress and began a life changing habit.Statr one day.

9 Methods For Effective Gout Treatment

Gout is mainly a condition connected to arthritis which occurs when uric acid crystals amass in certain joints. Gout usually affects the large toe, but it may also appear in other joints such as the ones in the foot, hand, ankle, knee, wrist, hand and elbow. The symptoms of gout can cause so much discomfort and even unbearable pain, and thus adequate treatment is needed to manage the pains and discomforts caused by gout.
Gout is caused when people's uric acid levels go above normal due to the breaking down of waste products called purines. Normally, uric acid can easily be dissolved into the blood and then filtered by the kidneys to be passed out through urine. But in some cases uric acid solidifies in the form of crystals and then accumulating in joints and tissues. This causes severe pains, inflammation, tenderness, warmness, and redness.

Gout Treatment
The treatment of gout aims to stop the attack of gouts, relieve the pain and the inflammation it causes, avoiding further attacks, and preventing complications such as the formation of kidney stones, tophi and the destruction of joints. The usual course of treatment involves altering the diet, providing medication to alleviate pain, prescribing medicine to manage inflammation, and finally, dispensing medication to lower the uric acid level. Normally, the treatment can be administered without much complication, but the process may be more difficult if the patient has other conditions that can be affected by gout.
Dietary Treatment
Gout treatment normally begins with alteration of the diet. Purine rich foods are eliminated as fluid intake is increased. Alcohol consumption is also decreased and weight loss is recommended to prevent gout attacks from worsening. But dietary treatment is usually not enough to treat gout, other steps are needed for full treatment of the disease.
Medical Treatment
There are many medications usually prescribed for gout treatment. Here are some of them:
1. NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs) - these drugs, particularly indomethacin, are usually first prescribed to reduce the symptoms of gout, particularly pain and inflammation. Normally, maximum dosages of NSAIDs are used for 48 hours to immediately help diminish the symptoms.
2. Colchicine - this is another medicine prescribed to alleviate symptoms of gout. It is helpful in preventing further gout attacks. Colchicine may either be taken in small amounts regularly for some months or in large dosages over a much shorter period for acute attacks. Colchicine works best when taken in conjunction with the other facets of gout treatment.
3. Corticosteroids - patients who are not able to take colchicines or NSAIDs are prescribed adrenocorticotropic hormones like predisnone, to alleviate the symptoms of acute out. These hormones are administered through intramuscular injections starting doses of 20 to 40mg during the first onset of gout and then tapering off for subsequent treatments.
4. Allupurinol - this is most popularly known as the brand Zylprim and is prescribed to lower uric acid levels by controlling the system that creates the substance in the body. This is more helpful for preventing gout, instead of treating attacks.
5. Probenecid - sold as Probalan or Benemid, this is usually prescribed for gouty arthritis and chronic gout. It is also helpful in preventing gout attacks rather than treating actually occurrences. The medicine helps the kidneys eliminate more uric acid out of the body.
6. Colbenemid - sold as Proben-C or Col-Probenecid, this medicine treats gout direcly and also lowers uric acid. This drug contains Colchicine and Probenecid.
7. Sulfinpyrazone - sold as Anturane, this drug also lowers uric acid levels in the blood and is thus a preventive treatment for gouty arthritis.
8. Losartan - sold as Hyzaar and Cozzar, this drug also helps lower uric acid levels, although it is not solely a medicine for gout. It is more used as an antihypertensive drug and an antagonist for angiotensin II receptor.
9. Analgesics - the levels of pain and discomfort brought about by gout varies from patient to patient and according to the gravity of the disease. Analgesics are also used to manage fevers that may accompany gout attacks.
Gout can cause so many inconveniences in one's life and it is thus important to administer proper treatment right away. Of course, as it is often said, prevention is better than cure and it is thus important to decrease chances of gout attacks by maintaining a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

It’s a fact, America is becoming obese at an alarming rate and the rest of the world is following close behind. We are eating more (and more of the wrong stuff) and exercising less or getting no exercise at all. Our health is in steep decline and doctor and hospital visits are at all time highs. Just a brisk 30-minute walk a day can begin to turn that around.You name it, we have it, and it’s getting worse. The U.S. Surgeon General recommends getting at least 20-30 minutes of moderate activity each day and many of us are falling far short of even that.Studies show the average person takes about 3000 to 5000 steps a day, and some even much less. Let’s face it, we just do not get the exercise our ancestors did a hundred or so years ago and we tend to eat more refined foods. For some of us, most of steps we take are from the easy chair in front of the TV to the fridge so we can fill up on snacks. For others, like me, we sit at a computer all day as part of our jobs.Many fitness experts recommend we walk 10,000 steps a day to maintain our weight and overall good health. 10,000 steps are approximately 5 miles, give or take depending on the length of your stride. You will need to purchase and wear a pedometer to count how many steps you take each day. Follow the directions that usually come with the pedometer. Do this for a week or two and you will get a good average step count. Your goal is to reach 10,000 or more steps each day. There is nothing magical about 10,000, but it will put you in the right ballpark.As a general rule, a person will burn about 100 calories walking a mile, depending on age, size, and fitness level. The heavier you are, the more calories you will burn.Become creative on ways to increase your steps. At work, go for walks at lunchtime. Go for walks with your spouse or children. Walk the dog. Walk to the store instead of driving, or park at the far end of the parking lot. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. For me, I take brisk 2-mile walks around the neighborhood twice a day everyday (aerobic walking). Just do whatever works best for you, but do it! You will need good walking shoes and socks to prevent injury when walking for exercise (like aerobic walking). If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, one of the most importnant thins that you can do is manage your weight. Being overweight can affect your blood sugar levels dramatically since fat cells can become resistant to insulin, causing your blood sugar levels to rise. Losing just 10 20 pounds can make a huge impact on your diabetes. In fact getting down to your recommended eweight can get you off of diabetic medicine and allow you to line healthier lifestyle.
You should never begin a weight loss diet on your own if you are a diabetic. Talk with your doctor and a diabetic educator. Set up an appointment to meet with a registered dietician. Losing weight on your own without the guidence of your doctor can be a dangerous to a diabetic. Your diabetic medicines will probably need to be adjusted as you lose weight, so it is importnant to have your doctor involved.
Start by cutting back by 500 calories per day. This is safe for most diabetics and will promote weight loss. The ideal goal is cut back on corbohydrates, proteins and fat equally. Your diet should consists of 50%-55% carbohydrates, 30% fats, and 10%-15% proteins.
Carbohydrates are very important in a diabetic diet. They have the beggest impact on blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates are broken down into sugars very early in the digestion process. It is important to get a refresher course on carbohydrates and how to measure them from the dietician.
Watch your blood sugar levels carefully when folloing a weight loss plan. You are at an increased risk for becoming hypoglycemic, especially you are exercising and losing weight but have't adjusted your diabetic medications. If you start to feel nauseated, sweating, or have trouble concentrating, have your blood sugar level cheked immediatly. It is a good idea to always carry fruit juices or other snacks with you.
Different types of exercise affect your blood sugar levels in different ways. The aerobic excercises such as, running or enything that gets your heart rate up, will drop your blood sugar level immediately. More strenuous exercise or weight lifting can drop your blood sugar hours later. It is important to plan accordingly for the type excercising that you are doing. Over time this will not be a problem as you lose the weight and are able to reduce your diabetic medication or may be stop it altogether.
Do plany of research on the best diabetic weight loss plan. Talk with your doctor and keep him updated frequently of your progress. Make sure that you follow a weight loss plan that is approved by your dietician or diabetic educator. Weight loss is never easy and it is a special challenge for someone with diabetis. However, the benefits of losing the weight far outweigh the alternative of living the rest of your life with diabetes

For some of us, it’s sweets that woo; for others, it’s salt. It can be greasy chips we choose, or diet pop we gulp. Bread soothes, meat rules, cheese pleads. Countless combos connive to command and control. And let’s not forget the dark devil himself, a seductive master who leaves us weak in the knees and vacant of sense…chocolate. Whichever cravings hold you hostage, these seven strategies can help you escape – freeing you to lose weight, sidestep diseases, and build health. 1. Satisfy Your Hunger Drive You must control your hunger drive to lose and maintain ideal weight – a mythical cultural mantra you may believe. When you fail to control your hunger and give in once more to your cravings, you feel inherently weak, lacking will power and self-control. Delete that myth from your brain. Your hunger drive cannot be controlled. It is a natural instinct, and, like all human instincts, it keeps you alive. When you’re thirsty, you drink. When you’re sleepy, you sleep. Fill Up on Good-Guy Carbs For all the carb confusion, there is one glaring fact. All carbs are not created equally. The good-guy carbohydrates, sourced by whole, fresh fruits, vegetables, unrefined grains (brown rice, not breads) and legumes, satisfy your hunger drive, thereby calming cravings. When one of your goodies, but baddie screams at you, whether mid-afternoon or during evening T.V. viewing, eat and fill up on nature’s best-for-you foods first, and be amazed by the fading of the craving. Hint: For cravings to disappear, you must eat enough of the best-for-you foods to really and truly fill you up. 3. Ditch Bad-Boy Carbs On the other hand, the bad boys incite cravings. Steer clear of them. Scout them out and ban them from your house, workplace, and car. As experience teaches, the more refined sugar, desserts, baked goods, breads, salty snacks, and chocolate you eat, the more hooked you get. If they are out of sight, they are much easier to avoid.
